Random Facts about France

So this week I'm blogging about random facts about France! Hopefully you enjoy them!

#1- In every town in France there is a Victor Hugo. Who was Victor Hugo? Basically he was a famous French writer who wrote all kinds of things.
#2- You have herd of Wilber the pig from Charlotte's Web but have you ever heard of Napoleon? ("The french Emperor? Napoleon Bonaparte?" ) In France it is illegal to name a pig Napoleon! Weird.

#3- The French Word Salute means both Hello and Goodbye. (Mrs. Congeniality: so if your on the phone with somebody and they won't stop talking and you say, okay aloha (in our case Salute) won't they just start over again?) did i get a laugh? No, "well at least she thinks I'm funny."

#4- "Yo, ho, haul together, hoist the colors high. Heave ho, thieves and beggars, never say we die." We knew people have been hung for committing a crime but a pig? What do these French people have with pigs! Yes in 1386 a pig was hung for being accused of committing a murder.

#5- "Let them eat cake!" Most of you are probably also thinking somewhere along he lines of 'Off with their heads!" Right? Well the first of the two phrases is falsely associated with Marie Antoinette. She never actually did say that seeing as the phrase was created 10 years before her birth.

#6- "Mennonite Girls Can Cook" "For the Joy of Cooking" are just two cooks books. There are two cook books published a day in France.

#7- "Here comes the Bride all dressed in white!" 1499 wearing a white wedding dress became a french tradition.

#8- The statue of Liberty was actually made in France.

Hope you enjoyed reading my last blog!

  1. I like all the quotes! But, it does seem like France has something against pigs. It's really strange that you can't name a pig Napoleon, and I don't know about a murderous pig either... And two french cook books published per day, that's a lot of cook books! It's ironic that an American statue widely known everywhere as an American symbol, wasn't even made in the USA! I did enjoy these random facts about France and your blog overall too!

  2. Wow Kiana! That was a great blog post, I really enjoyed all those facts. No Napoleon, my pet mouse! I really like how you had a lot of quotes in there, don't worry they made me laugh! My favourite would have to be the one where they hung a pig because he was accused for murdering! One crazy fact about Spain is that every year people gather in a small town and throw a big over the roof, the people below make an attempt to catch it. I really enjoyed reading your blog over this semester I learned a lot about your country, France! Good job!
